Examples

C — create pipe

int fds[2];
if (pipe(fds) == -1) perror("pipe");

Notes

On macOS pipes are backed by a kernel pipe object with a 16 KiB default buffer that the kernel can grow up to 64 KiB. fds[0] is the read end and fds[1] the write end. Writes of PIPE_BUF or less are atomic; closing the read end causes writers to receive SIGPIPE and EPIPE.

Detection

No ES event; trace via syscall::pipe:entry in DTrace. lsof shows pipe fds with type PIPE and an inode pairing both ends.
