Notes

Userspace callers typically reach this through dispatch sources of type DISPATCH_SOURCE_TYPE_MEMORYPRESSURE rather than calling the syscall directly. The kernel tracks NORMAL / WARN / CRITICAL transitions inside the VM stats and wakes registered waiters when crossing a threshold — used by Safari, WebKit's WebProcess and large database engines to drop caches before jetsam fires.

Detection

memorystatus_control(2) and the kperf memorystatus subsystem expose the same transitions; sysdiagnose and Instruments' Memory Pressure track display them as a coloured band.
